With the exceptional loan of Rembrandt’s Self portrait from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo opens a new event on 9 July, devoted to the great masters of European painting. This special occasion offers visitors an opportunity to get to know the Dutchman artists in the Museum’s collection, in a new dedicated exhibition that also explores the themes of portraits, self portraits and self-analysis. The young Rembrandt observes the viewer, partially emerging from the shadows, his hair dishevelled. Meeting his eyes is pure emotion.

Love for books is as sacred as that for Rembrandt, indeed I think they complement each other each other.

Vincent Van Gogh, june 1880

The works

The idea of giving context to the Self-portrait through a choice of paintings, engravings and drawings from the collections of the Accademia Carrara, moved among Dutch artists very close to Rembrandt, for having been his friends and collaborators such as the contemporary Jan Lievens or pupils like Gerbrandt Eeckhout, and Italian personalities so sensitive to his style that they spread his fortune.
